Do you like to spend time in the woods? Do you enjoy hiking, backpacking, hunting, fishing, paddling, motor boating, snowmobiling, or cross-country skiing? Are you an aspiring Maine Guide? Would you like to become part of a local Search & Rescue team? Whether your profession takes you to the woods or you enjoy spending time in the backcountry with friends and family this course is for you! You will learn to read and interpret the language of maps. After you feel confident in map reading we will help you to unlock the mystery of the compass. It is a simple but very effective tool that doesn’t rely on satellites or batteries. The final portion of the course is practicing using them together. We will set a fun course for you to navigate and test your skills!

All ages and abilities are welcome, 12 and under should be accompanied by an adult. 6 and under attend for free.

The Maine woods are thick and can be featureless. Learning to trust your knowledge and your compass will open up a world of exploration. You will gain the skills to go into more remote locations with self-confidence. Bring yourself, a hearty lunch and your sense of direction!
